Quotes from the Reviews - What People Say about:

Audio

Audio:

"I'm happy with that, so I'd give them 5 stars on audio performance."

Cable

Cable:
"Also both were suffering from fairly average connection from the lead to the headset (I was in the habit of storing them away in the case every night, but I wont from now on - the plastic connection at the end of the cable turns to mush after about 6 months). They are quite painful to wear after 5-10 minutes because of the stupid headset cushion design."
_
"I only found the short cord and didn't see the long straight cord in another part of the bag at first and was upset that the cord was coiled and short and then I found the long straight cord and I just had to fix this review."
_
"The cable still has the same problem as the SRH440 where the audio cuts in and out."
_
"The ear pads are comfortable and the cord pretty low-profile."
_
"The cord doesn't pop off of the headphones easily at all, so you don't need to worry about that."
_
"Come in a very nice case, with an extra cable (detacheable), and extra pad covers."
_
"The removable cables were convenient...the shorter coiled cable was good for listening with portable devices and the longer straight cable worked well for stationary listening.3) Easily driven by portable devices."

Design

Design:
"Part of the problem is the folding design."
_
"The design is definitely not the best."
_
"Terrible design and materials (cheap plastic) for a professional quality set of earphones."
_
"They have lost my confidence and will continue to lose customers with this design."
_
"Design:The design is extraordinarily plastic-y."

Listening

Listening:
"It's pretty annoying for long listening sessions, actually."
_
"My only negative would be that for sustained listening they are, perhaps, a bit hard on the crown of the head, maybe I have the wrong shaped head, but after a long session I could feel it was uncomfortable."
_
"The headband is a nightmare and becomes extremely uncomfortable after an hour or two of listening."
_
"Those who hate treble also will not like these (even though it's very smooth and pleasant treble - not sibilant or harsh at all - coming from someone who experienced painful ear fatigue from listening to Sennheiser HD 280 Pros).I should note that when I find a flaw in a headphone I try to correct it with equalization."
_
"*Extremely* detailed sound, light weight, Velour felt ear pads comfortable but make your ears hot after listening for a while."
_
"It's pretty annoying for long listening sessions, actually."
_
"I've just finished a lot and grueling process of completing a record, and these headphones were PERFECT for listening back to mixes and making tweaks."
_
"The Shure SRH940s are purposed for critical listening applications...in other words, these headphones are at their best when you are using them to critique various aspects of sound."
_
"They are designed to flatten sound so that you can appropriately listen and critique your mixes or other kinds of sound forms with exact accuracy, not to flatter sound for pleasurable listening if you will."

Music

Music:
"Bass-heavy music such as trap or even generic hip-hop is unfortunately extremely lacking."
_
"To summarize: they are great for any music, but they become truly amazing when you feed them more power."
_
"I've found them to be versatile performers, good for TV and film viewing, as well as a wide range of acoustic and electric music."
_
"If I use these on my Droid Razor maxx with music, I notice no problem."
_
"They aren't over powered by the bass, but the fact that the sounds are so clean that you can feel the bass strike as it hits and plays so you can just fall in love with the music even more is wonderful."
_
"I could listen to these headphones in a crowded room with a lot of noise and still feel like it was just me and the music.5) Nice accessories."

Plastic

Plastic:
"But, the plastic armature for the right side broke after 3 weeks of NORMAL use."
_
"I had them for at most 2 months and just like everyone else here they broke right along the hinge because the plastic is horribly cheap!"
_
"Terrible design and materials (cheap plastic) for a professional quality set of earphones."
_
"The joint between the headband and the cups is weak plastic which requires a lot of TLC."
_
"Though mine only lasted for three years with moderate use before the plastic arm broke on one end."
_
"Sadly, the weak plastic is useless for long-term durability."
_
"These are great-sounding headphones, but as much as I can learn to compensate for their idiosyncrasies in my mixes, I can't make the plastic in the frames durable enough to survive constant use."
_
"It could happen, because of the tension on some of the plastic, but I have had no problem thus far."
_
"Major Con: The build quality of the headband is stupid, the headband is all hard plastic but breaks easily."
_
"I can still hear surrounding noises while wearing them, but I find that to be good so that I can be more aware of my surroundings.<< Durability >>Despite the 940's being made of plastic for the most part (the outer ear piece and the SHURE logo are metal), the 940's feel pretty durable."
_
"Sadly, the weak plastic is useless for long-term durability."

Price

Price:
"It is extremely hard to find their pro products at any price lower than the one at their web site."
_
"I don't necessarily have any problem with the SRH940's bass and mids, however they're not brilliantly good for the price range like the treble is -- they're just about average."
_
"This product deserves 5 stars for the reasons that these headphones are the best quality headphones you can get for this price range."
_
"Whether using these headphones for sound or personal use it is the way to go and a good way to spend your money."
_
"Comparable (or, according to some reviews, superior) performance for a fifth of the price?"
_
"Great price for the quality they deliver."
_
"If I rate them based on what they're advertised to do, which is be great reference headphones at a fantastic price, these really are some of the best."

Quality

Quality:
"As far as negatives for the SRH940s, I have to say the Shure's build quality were definitely infurior to that of Sennheiser's."
_
"The ATH M50's by audio technica are inferior in their sound quality but they build a robust quality product."
_
"This sounded wonderful, but build quality is very poor."
_
"Instrument separation is excellent, as is tone quality."
_
"You can distinctly hear the placement and the different tonal quality of the horns in an orchestral recording, for example - something that doesn't come across well with lower quality headphones."

Sound

Sound:
"Especially the Beats by Dre headphones that cost the same amount, they sound terrible compared to these."
_
"Not Happy....Note: They do have great sound."
_
"Male vocals don't sound extraordinarily odd nor do they 'ruin' any songs, but it almost sounds like some male vocals take a backstage."
_
"Unfortunately, they don't sound very musical."
_
"what i was looking for:- authentic sound- i love bass, so bass should be present on at least normal level, could be overbassed- precise sound, analytical (where i can analyze what are the small-sounds i never heard before), fast-response (some headphones sound lazy)- works with my macbook air, ideally no amp required (yet this was a optional req)i tried before: sennheiser hd600, hd650, 800, audiotechnica md50, ultimate ears 6000, bose a2e, bunch of low-end sennheisers, Sonny MD1000, AKGs, etc, etc...actually i was surprised, how the sennheisers sound really bad (weak, uncharacteristical sound), as well other semi-open and open headphones (yep, an amp was used)the shure's general impression: yeah, makes a sound, which leaves everybody behind by a year-light."
_
"The ATH M50's by audio technica are inferior in their sound quality but they build a robust quality product."
_
"I agree with previous reviews - great sound."
_
"I'm big on accurate sound, not over emphasized, and they hit the bullseye"
_
"A common problem with closed back phones is muddiness, but after doing a lot of research, I decided to purchase the Shure SRH940's which were supposed to offer ample clarity and good sound isolation."
_
"While the sound stage is not as broad as some of the open-back headphones I've used, the SRH940's sound stage is very decent for closed-back headphones."

Treble

Treble:
"These were meant to play music without emphasising bass, mids, or trebles and expose errors in your mix master."
_
"These headphones deliver a great mix of deep bass and crisp treble without compromising comfort."
_
"I don't necessarily have any problem with the SRH940's bass and mids, however they're not brilliantly good for the price range like the treble is -- they're just about average."
_
"On my HD650s for example, I found the treble to be recessed (a bit quieter than neutral), so I applied a treble boost equalization -- which fixed the problem perfectly."
_
"Those who prefer headphones with excessive bass and suppressed treble may not like these."
_
"The bass response is very nice as well, but in no way drowns the mid-range and treble."
_
"I enjoyed the treble and revealing nature of the headphones, but never felt that the sound had enough weight to it."
_
"These emphasize the treble with a spike around 10Hz and have unbelievable detail."
_
"- Pristine treble, the best I've ever heard under $900."
_
"The upper treble on the SRH940 (10+khz) is just brilliantly good to my ears."

Vocal

Vocal:
"Male vocals don't sound extraordinarily odd nor do they 'ruin' any songs, but it almost sounds like some male vocals take a backstage."
_
"Female high pitch vocals sound pretty good on these but low end vocals from male singers sound out of place and quite odd."
_
"If you like music that features very good production or vocals (especially female) these will shine."
_
"Treble quality also increases noticeably if you have the ear for it... very precise treble sounds you might find in electronic music (or subtly, in vocals) will sound cleaner and incredibly crystal clear from a good audio source."
_
"<< The Very Quick Summary >>Audio Quality: 4.5 5Comfort: 5 5Design: 4 5Value: 5 5Overall Rating: 4.6 5Pros: Very comfortable; deep low-bass; excellent for: orchestra, classical, jazz, vocals, and certain kinds of pop, R&B;, and rock music; lots of bundled extras; able to fold-up nicely; detachable cable; can lie 'flat' (see the review for more details on that); headband has adjustment markers; can run from an iPod without an amp; really decent soundstageCons: Mid-bass could use a tad-bit more 'oomph' without using an EQ; very slightly fatiguing; cable is a bit too long or heavy; poorly recorded or mastered tracks sound bad<< About Me >>Believe it or not, I used to think bass was the one thing I liked from my music."
