Quotes from the Reviews - What People Say about:

Battery

Battery:
"More generally, I also dislike proprietary battery which forces you to buy at least two, if doing a shoot of any length, although several camera makers have taken that route."
_
"- LCD screen up down angle out was fine for my needs, didn't need side pop out or full swivel (I'm happy to use my smartphone for selfies).Things I wasn't too crazy about, mostly minor:- Battery gauge not reliable, stays at full a long time, then seems to drop only briefly to 3 4 full before immediately dying with no other warning."
_
"I also bought a VanGoddy Laurel bag for the camera, which fit the camera very well, and two extra batteries."
_
"Bought the camera because a friend has it and takes fabulous photos all day without need for a battery change out."
_
"While battery consumption is not really a problem, they do drop down pretty quickly when they start to weaken and weak batteries affect how the camera responds, so keep an extra charged battery handy."
_
"Not a big deal for me since I was carrying two spares, easy since these batteries are tiny and inexpensive."

Focus

Focus:
"Something as simple as how to focus required quite a bit of trail and error."
_
"Tried the comparable new Canon and Nikon out in the store and the AutoFocus couldn't get a good quick fix at high zoom so went with this one."
_
"Autofocus is also a problem in rain or snow as the camera tends to focus on the foreground precipitation rather than the subject."
_
"I also get frustrated when the automatic focus seems to lock in on everything except the subject I am trying to shoot despite having my subject squarely in the focus brackets."
_
"The manual focus switch is on side of the lens and not easy to adjust on the fly."
_
"Make sure you get 4-5 extra batteries and the ability to charge them in the field as batteries during operation using the zoom and autofocus constantly are good for about 45mins, taking about twice that time to charge."
_
"Clarity was pretty good as was the sound; the AF did a decent job with holding focus even when zooming in and out quickly+ Optical steadyshot works well around 3.5-4 stops, in line with other good IS systemsCons:- No raw, for this class of camera it loses a star based purely on that- Jpegs are ok at lower ISO levels, but run into overprocessing strong noise reduction levels at anything over base ISO."
_
"When you are zoomed in to 800-1200 mm, you need to be about 30 feet away from your subject to be able to focus."
_
"The only drawback is the relatively long minimum focus at full zoom...twice that of the Canon SX50HS...but it has closer focus out to 600mm or so than the Canon and excellent macro performance at 50mm-85mm."

Image

Image:
"the zoom range of this camera is fantastic but the problem is the photo quality is not that much good in 50x .the photo taken from 10 meter and less is excpatble .good macro capabilty ."
_
"So I had to work out what each control did, every time I took a photo with which I was unsatisfied."
_
"Unfortunately though, whilst the image quality is quite good at lower ISO levels, it takes a significant dive in less than ideal conditions."
_
"They include a lack of quick access to a macro setting, (I got used to that little flower icon on the options dial which doesn't appear on this camera--but the camera does have a macro setting), loopy auto-focus when the battery starts to weaken, lousy view finder image quality and somewhat confusing methods for using the manual settings."
_
"Excellent image quality (Sony style...great looking images at normal viewing, crappy pixel level...but I do not pixel peep)."
_
"It's strength is it's ability to produce sharp images at f2.8 to f3.5, so in low light it's able to produce bright, sharp images."
_
"It still suits my needs because for my intended use I just need decent quality images at full zoom."
_
"This reivew is to help you decide if the camera suits your needs (I raise some good and bad points that might not matter to you)Sadly you are stuck with Sony's less than great jpeg engine, and it can't be overlooked that Sony have decided to deny users the chance to use raw processing (in 2014 this is a serious omission and all their rivals now offer this, and have done for some time)The HX400 isn't a bad camera by any means, but the price is fairly steep and it falls short on the image quality frontMy good and bad points:Pros:+ Build is quite decent feels comfy in the hand with sensible and easy to learn controls+ Useful 50x zoom (24-1200mm equivalent) starts at f2.8 dropping to f6.3 (ok speed wise for the range) it's quite good sharpness wise, not tack sharp at 24mm on the edges, but quite consistent across the range..it's still quite good at 1200mm too+ Excellent 921k 3 rear LCD that is clear and sharp, not fully articulated (pull it out for overhead or low angle shooting) nice overall though+ Mostly well featured, usual scene modes, manual mode, lots of filters, good macro ability, sweep panoramic mode: you can set the camera to remember your settings via 2 custom positions on the main mode dial.+ Built in wifi, NFC and GPS, GPS locked on quite quickly too+ EVF is quite good, clear and with a decent refresh rate, has eye sensor too."

Lens

Lens:
"I had the same problems but I ordered the niceEshop(TM) Black Universal 55mm Lens Cover Snap on Lens Cap With Cable for SLR Cameras from Amazon and it is perfect."
_
"Some people have mentioned that the lens cap wasn't easy to take off and put on and wasn't tethered to the camera like the 200 model."
_
"However, the upcoming excursion had serious space restrictions, and I wasn't particularly adept with the controls on the Olympus, so I was nervous about lugging multiple lenses and then not being able to get decent photos with them."
_
"I did get some great photos with the camera but issues with the build quality and even though it has great glass in the lens muddy noisy photos were an issue and disappointed that I got dust inside the lens."
_
"The manual focus switch is on side of the lens and not easy to adjust on the fly."
_
"I find it much easier to grasp and I like being able to just drop the lens cap and not worry about it when I am taking pictures."
_
"carl zeiss lens are the best."
_
"I love the telephoto lens (50x) You can just about hold it still hand held, but of course, a telephoto lens always performs best when using a tripod."
_
"Last year my daughter gave me her old Olympus micro four-thirds PEN EP1 with a few lenses, including a 75-300mm zoom (equivalent to 600mm) that has pretty good optics."

Light

Light:
"It's strength is it's ability to produce sharp images at f2.8 to f3.5, so in low light it's able to produce bright, sharp images."
_
"Takes good photos with sufficient light but poor photos with low level lighting."
_
"It works well in low light."
_
"But when the ambient light was good, some of my shots were comparable or even better than his."
_
"The camera is light and easy to hold and the controls soon become quite intuitive."

"However, the upcoming excursion had serious space restrictions, and I wasn't particularly adept with the controls on the Olympus, so I was nervous about lugging multiple lenses and then not being able to get decent photos with them."
_
"Using burst mode and adjusting the settings to let in a little extra light got me bird photos I never imagined I would be able to achieve."
_
"I did get some great photos with the camera but issues with the build quality and even though it has great glass in the lens muddy noisy photos were an issue and disappointed that I got dust inside the lens."
_
"Reasons to buy:-This a great does-it-all camera: Enough megapixels to take photos for large print, good enough glass to make them clear and more-The 50x (1600mm equivalent) zoom takes great photos at long distances with the right lighting - my wife got photos of monkeys at 500 yards that my 200mm F2.8 would never be able to."
_
"Takes good photos with sufficient light but poor photos with low level lighting."
_
"With very little experience, he brought back some truely amazing photos, both distance and closeups."
_
"You need bright sunny conditions to shoot good quality video out at max-zoom, but if you have that then it is pretty amazing the quality of the photos and video even at the full-max digital zoom."
_
"great camera just went to Alaska and the photos are out of this world landscape Alaska does not have very many animals like Florida"

Price

Price:
"Sharpening artefacts are also present in images due to poor jpeg processing- Memory card slot at the bottom of the camera in the batery compartment, bit of a pain for tripod users- Zoom motor can be heard in video mode (in quiet environments)- Burst mode of 10fps can only shoot for about a second (common problem on bridge models) a bigger buffer would help a lot here- Camera strap, rarely do I mention this but for a camera this price it's too narrow and uncomfortable- High price (it's come down quite a bit but not nearly enough)The camera is quite nice to use and I find it fits the hand well (it's quite similar to Sony's SLT models layout wise), grip is comfy and secure."
_
"The only negative I read was that it had a cheap plastic feel to it."
_
"It's a great camera, and for the money it can't be beat."
_
"Great little camera for the price, nothing too fancy but well worth every penny"
_
"This does much more than many DSLRs at a very reasonable price."
_
"The images it captures with ease from across the room are amazing for the price of this camera."
_
"Great camera at a wonderful price."

Speed

Speed:
"They are reasonably detailed at the lower ISO settings, and satisfactory, but when light levels drop and high ISO speeds are used they are really not as good as they should be."
_
"- that this and other Sony HX, RX, and Alpha series Cameras are lightning fast in CAPTURING that image you worked hard to get right."
_
"The HS50 has slightly less range, but also sports a decent EVF and LCD and has very fast AF in good light."

"Choosing a mode other than Superior Auto speeds things up quite a bit, but that is also the mode that gives the best results, especially at the longer zoom ranges."
_
"Image processing is incredibly slow on the Superior Auto setting."
_
"because it was fast and easy to power on the camera, select mode, zoom, auto-focus, and start clicking."

Video

Video:
"The start stop button for video is hard to reach while filming, but isn't a forever limit in that one can get better with practice."
_
"You need bright sunny conditions to shoot good quality video out at max-zoom, but if you have that then it is pretty amazing the quality of the photos and video even at the full-max digital zoom."
_
"I like how it makes a great camera as a point and shoot., and a movie camera all in one."
_
"With mine, I am able to make movies of people from about a half mile away."
_
"It's better than the Canon SX50 EVF, but not up to the FZ200 or HS50 XS-1+ Metering and AF were both up to acceptable levels, exposures are mostly quite good (in lower light you might need to add some more exposure) AF was fairly fast across most of the range, drops off at the tele end (as they all do) It was on target more often that not, a bit above average performance here+ Battery life is ok at about 330 shots, not class leading but not bad either+ Video mode is quite good, full HD with stereo sound 25 50p supported too."

"Naturally 100X digital zoom wasn't super clear, but I still got more interesting shots I'm happy to have (and can see subjects in those I couldn't even see clearly with good binoculars).- Size weight grip: Lightweight and compact, esp."
_
"The 50X zoom is really hard to beat especially with both the traditional zoom lever around the shutter release and the SLR-like zoom ring."
_
"The best zoom Camara I've ever had."
